Note TakingStep 1: Note Taking
Notes begin with an essential question to guide students in selecting what is relevant. Students then paraphrase information, use abbreviations/symbols, and format notes to show relationships. What would students take notes on? Cornell Notes can be taken during class lectures, text or article reading, class power points, class readings, videos, etc... Does it have to be formatted in the 2-column style? Quite simply, no. The magic of CN comes from the process and the layered encounters at varying levels of thinking. The CN format is set-up to naturally guide students through the four key components of interactive note taking. To be clear, students need to move through the method of interactive note taking to make the learning gains associated with the research. What materials do I need? Students may take Cornell Notes in a spiral notebook or on notebook paper that they set-up in the Cornell Note Format, and them may also use pre-formatted Cornell Note paper, as required by the content area teachers. Students are expected to use the four components of the Cornell Note method. |
