AWL is a list of high frequency words that our students will encounter in their academic texts and was developed by Averil Coxhead. The list contains 570 word families and is divided into 10 sublists. The version of AWL that we used is AVID was further developed by Michael Stubbs and is ordered by word families. Sublist 1 has the most frequently used words, and Sublist 10 the least frequent.
